A REVIEW OVER KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICES OF STROKE SURVIVORS REGARDING SECONDARY STROKE PREVENTION

Dr dwark Atolu

Abstract

Risk management has been used to design strategies to prevent both primary and secondary stroke. These strategies have largely relied upon health professionals providing information, support and monitoring of patients conditions and control of individual risk factors. However, these strategies have not always been successful in the long-term management and prevention of secondary cardiovascular disease. The study also revealed that half of the stroke survivors who participated in the study were unable to name a single appropriate action to take to prevent secondary stroke. A significant proportion of stroke survivors also continue to smoke and or consume alcohol contrary to expectations and recommendations. Only a relatively small percentage of stroke survivors comply with lifestyle changes prescribed to them such as diet modification and engaging in physical exercise. This review explores the literature surrounding risk awareness as a tool to improve patient adherence to medications and lifestyle behaviours to reduce risk of secondary stroke.
